Synopsis
เรื่องย่อ
In the 1970s. Under the colonial government, Hong Kong was plagued by corruption. However, with the founding of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), corruption syndicates led by British government officials were brought down, putting society back on track and leading Hong Kong into a golden era of economic development.

In this war against corruption, Senior Principal Investigator LAU Kai Yuen (Andy LAU) had been a mighty warrior who brought down countless corrupted officials. Just as he believed that stability and prosperity were within reach, a new era of greed takes him into a new battle against corruption.

In the 1980s, the Hang Seng Index hits a historic peak of over 1,700 points during a stock market boom. As the excitement among common folks reach fever pitch, the market makes a dramatic reversal. Giant conglomerate Carmen Enterprises, which has been valued at $17.1 billion, suddenly collapses. As its stocks are rendered worthless, shareholders suffer heavy losses. Some even lose their life savings and as a result, their lives.

The group’s collapse involves corruption and bribery among local, British-funded and overseas consortiums, as well as government officials. Ordered to investigate the reasons behind the collapse, Lau has his sights set on Carmen’s chairman, CHING Yat Yin (Tony LEUNG).

An overseas-born Chinese, Ching’s background has always been an enigma. In fact, he doesn’t even have Hong Kong residency. Over a decade ago, Ching finds himself fleeing from creditors when his business overseas fails. Arriving in Hong Kong with nothing, he lives in a slum occupied by people from all walks of life. By chance, he becomes friends with TSANG Kim Kiu (Simon YAM), a second-generation upper-cruster. Through clever tricks, the two men make their first pot of gold from the emerging real estate industry. Tsang brings Ching into upper crust society, but Ching’s net worth is nothing compared to the city’s wealthy plutocrats. Ridiculed by the elite, Ching vows to build an empire of gold.

Starting with a pest control company worth merely several hundred thousand dollars, Ching forms over a hundred companies within a year and finds success. He recruits the best talents; a loyal secretary, a brilliant stock market dealer, rich heirs, legal elites, bank tycoons and heads of listed companies all become his trusted generals, taking the limelight in the financial world. Beating all odds, Ching’s company goes public and sets its sights on the main landmark of the city’s financial district. Challenging the city’s four largest British-owned firms, Ching wants to be nothing short of a legend.

Just as Ching is hitting his stride, TSANG Kim Kiu suddenly appears and asks for his piece of the pie. Valuing loyalty, Ching obliges Tsang and even lets him take the limelight by letting him take the company global to Europe, the U.S. and across Asia. Carmen Enterprises becomes a global firm. Even the four major British firms have to look up to Ching and invest billions of dollars in him.

However, a small stock market crash exposes Carmen’s true nature. The so-called empire is actually deeply corrupted, built on scams upon scams that are built to cover up each other.

Lau’s investigation for the ICAC exposes the cracks in Carmen Enterprises. Tsang blackmails Ching to let him walk away, but he mysteriously vanishes several days later, leaving his only son to bear billions of dollars in debts. There is mystery fund that turns out to be from a bank in a small nation, but the bank’s special investigator is found murdered. The company attorney who holds the most clues conveniently dies of suicide. Even the lives of Lau’s family come under threat.

After numerous challenges, Lau finally manages to take Ching to court. When the two men meet, Ching justifies himself with distorted logic. Just Lau thinks that he has finally brought Ching to justice, the presiding judge turns out to have been bribed. The story has just begun.

Q: What was the origin of The Goldfinger?

Director: My childhood memories. When I was little, there were times when the adults around me become gloomy and miserable out of the blue, and misfortune befell the families of my friends and playmates out of nowhere. When I grew up, I learned that it was due to different financial tsunamis over the years. Out of curiosity, I read up on a lot of information about that world. When I became a scriptwriter, I wanted to turn what I read into a story.

Q: What was the biggest challenge during the creative and production process?

Director: The concept of commercial crime is very simple, but the process is very complex. They involve many parties and an intricate web of relationships. So, the biggest challenge was to simplify the content to the point that it can be expressed in the form of a dramatic film. The process of converting these ideas into language and visuals must involve trade-offs, and they must be expressed with concise character dynamics.

Q: Did you decide on the Tony Leung-Andy Lau pairing from the very beginning? And why did you choose them?

Q: You used many young actors in the film. What is your evaluation of them, and what do you expect for them?

Director: I like this generation of young actors. Many of them are outstanding actors, so I’ve been looking for a chance to work with them. They had to go up against four award-winning actors with different acting style throughout the film, but they weren’t intimidated at all. They were even brave enough to try new things and interact with them. This alone already makes their performances worth looking forward to. New actors don’t get the chance to work on large productions, but it’s exactly large productions that can inspire and improve actors. I hope more audiences will have the chance to appreciate and recognize their talent with this film.

Thanks to his persistence, he discovers that something sinister is at play behind the collapse. In the process, Lau uncovers a mystery fund from a bank in a small nation, the bank’s special investigator is murdered, Carmen Enterprises’ attorney dies in a strange case of suicide, and even Lau’s family comes under threat. Lau nevertheless defies the odds and manages to bring Ching to court. However, the sinister Ching resorts to despicable means to obstruct the trial. Although Lau’s investigation causes him to neglect his family, Lau still has the support and understanding of his wife, SUEN Wei.

Even the stock market broken he uses ends up betraying him and switches allegiance to Ching’s company.
